A survey questionnaire was sent to all 47 countries in the WHO African Region to collect information on blood supply and demand for the first 5months of 2019 and 2020, respectively, and on COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma therapy in September 2020.
Thirty-seven countries provided responses. The total number of blood donations dropped in 32 countries while it increased in five countries. The proportion of blood drives also decreased in 21 countries and increased in nine countries. The blood requested and issued for transfusion decreased for blood demand and for blood issued for transfusion in 30 countries. Ten countries reported some activities of convalescent plasma. However, very few units of this product collected have been transfused to COVID-19 patients.

Placental abnormalities can affect foetus development and may be responsible for a low weight of the infant at birth; however, knowledge on their clinical significance in the canine species is limited. We aimed to describe macroscopic and microscopic findings in the canine placenta and amnion at term in clinically uncomplicated pregnancies and to evaluate their relationship with birth weight of healthy puppies. During natural delivery or C-section, the birth weight of 82 puppies was recorded, 72 placentas and 66 amnions were recovered. The foetal and maternal surfaces of the placental girdle, marginal haematoma and amnion were evaluated. Each gross finding was recorded, morphometrically assessed and sampled for histological diagnosis. Furthermore, specimens of placenta and amnion were collected from representative areas and microscopic deviations from normal structure were evaluated in haematoxylin and eosin sections. Gross examination revealed 'abnormalities' inever, no implications on puppies' birth weight were observed. Deviations from 'normal' morphology of canine foetal adnexa warrant further investigation to assess their clinical implications if present.Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CAR T) is a novel intervention for relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (R/R DLBCL) and other hematologic malignancies. However, it is associated with prolonged hematologic toxicity (PHT) that is unpredictable and can significantly impair patients' quality of life.?Reported here is a single-center experience with PHT in adult patients with R/R DLBCL who received commercial CAR T-cell therapy between March 1, 2018 and May 30, 2020. Prolonged hematologic toxicity was defined as ? grade 3 neutropenia or thrombocytopenia at day +30 after CAR T-cell therapy. Of the 31 patients identified, 18 patients (58%) developed PHT. Patients with PHT had a shorter 1-year overall survival (OS) than patients without PHT (36% vs. 81%, P ?100?mg/L (P =?.007), and ferritin greater than the upper limit of normal at day +30. Seven patients with PHT underwent a bone marrow biopsy after CAR T-cell therapy; all showed complete aplasia or were hypocellular with cellularity ranging from less then 5% to 10%. An understanding of the factors that regulate NPC behavior is critical for developing therapeutics to repair the injured central nervous system. Herein, we demonstrate that myelin basic protein (MBP), the major cytoplasmic protein constituent of the myelin sheath in oligodendrocytes, can regulate NPC behavior. Under physiological conditions, NPCs are not in contact with intracellular MBP; however, upon injury, MBP is released into the neural parenchyma. We reveal that MBP presented in a spinal cord niche is inhibitory to NPC proliferation. This inhibitory effect is regionally distinct as spinal cord NPCs, but not forebrain-derived NPCs, are inhibited by MBP. We performed coculture and conditioned media experiments that reveal the stem cell niche is a key regulator of MBP's inhibitory actions on NPCs.
